Our Story
1964-1967 Skunk Hollow Road In January of 1964, Saxon Hill School served its first group of young children and their families. Founded by DeeDee Jameson and Willy Cochran, the school was located in DeeDee’s home on Skunk Hollow Road – in what was known as the “Saxon Hill” area of Jericho. The school’s success was largely due to the commitment that families and teachers brought to a “hands-on” education philosophy in which children were encouraged to investigate, explore, and create. Children were respected as young human beings of great value. Families were supported in their wishes to be involved in their children’s education. 1967 Jericho Town Hall building In a few years, the school outgrew the Jameson home and was moved to the present Town Hall. During the 1967-1968 school year, the families were advised that DeeDee could no longer operate the school. They organized as a family cooperative, retaining the equipment and supplies, and Willy Cochran remained as Head Teacher. 1968- 1985 In the ensuing years, the school saw several changes, involving moves from one location to another, the retirement of Willy Cochran, and the modification of programs to meet the changing needs of families. (Read about Willy Cochran ) 1985-2015 Jericho Red Mill For three decades, from 1985 -2015 our school thrived in the red clapboard building next to the Jericho Red Mill. Moving away from the beloved space was a blow to the community. (Read about it here: Seven Days Article & Free Press Article) 2015-present 10 River Road, Jericho In 2015 SHS moved to 10 River Road, occupying 2 unused classrooms at the Underhill ID school. In 2019 the building moved their elementary students to Underhill Central & Jericho Elementary School. It took in the MMUUSD offices, the UID Preschools and First Roots, a daycare for babies and toddlers. We expanded our space to encompass 3 classrooms for morning preschool, a classroom for the new Extended Discovery program as well as a library and office space. Long Time Legend For over three decades, Michelle Campbell served our school as teacher and Director of Education at SHS. She became a beloved leader of the community and ushered SHS from the Red Mill location to the current River Road location. Michelle even contributed to the success of SHS after her retirement by volunteering in classrooms as the Documentarian. Through observation, photos and collections of children's work, she guided both families and teachers to the inner working of a child's development. The Refresh Years We are now moving into the 2nd quarter of the 21st century! With school year 2024-2025 we have newly developed brand elements that visually represent Saxon Hill School perfectly! These can be seen on our website, publicity and our gorgeous new front sign. Our school space has beautiful new flooring, storage for teachers has been upgraded and our by-laws, budget process, Staff Handbook & Family Handbook are all in good order. SHS is also looking ahead to keep our school thriving for decades to come while staying grounded in our origins. The success of the school can be attributed to the school’s philosophy and mission and the deep commitment that families exhibit to their children when they are active participants in their educational process. There is no question but that the commitment of capable and caring teachers throughout the school’s existence has contributed significantly to the longevity of this family cooperative. |
